Stratton Youth U/13’s continued their fine form with an excellent performance resulting in a 5-0 win away v Pewsey Vale. On a tough pitch in windy conditions neither team were able to get their foot on the ball early on. It took until mid way through the first half for Stratton to create their first opening, Zac Zamiri getting to the ball just before the keeper but unfortunately steering just wide of the goal. Another chance was put just wide from Charlie Miller not long after and it looked like it wasn’t going to be Stratton's day. It was late in the first half that Stratton scored their first, when a shot from Charlie Miller was deflected in. Stratton who had grown into the game dominated the second half and added further goals from Joe Lovell and Zac Zamiri. The goal of the game came as Stratton started with a goal kick played out to Jake Meredith who combined with Joe Lovell down the right hand side for Stratton before a through ball was latched onto by Zac Zamiri who calmly squared the ball for a first time finish from Charlie Miller. The fifth and final goal came from George Quli, scoring his first of the season following a brief period up front. Overall an excellent performance from everyone involved and a solid performance which resulted in another clean sheet for Emmanuel Meeke in goal.
Stratton Youth U/11's latest league fixture was away to AFC Newbury Boys and Girls. It proved to be a very tough game against a well organised and talented home side. Stratton struggled to get to grips with the home teams quality but some great keeping from James Bassett and resolute defending from Luke Baker, Otto Baxter and player of the match Ben Szczerkowski helped keep the score line down. The second half showed a marked improvement from Stratton with Jack Miller, Tom Foley, Jaden Mullis and Sami Zamiri creating chances for the away team.
Stratton Youth U/10s kicked off the new year with a home game against Royal Wootton Bassett. Despite the 4 week gap in fixtures they showed no signs of rustiness and bombarded the opposition goal in the first quarter. It looked like they were not going to get the reward for their possession after hitting the woodwork three times and having a fine shot cleared off the line before finally Fin Stratford blasted home. It was no more than the U/10s deserved with Idris Thomas-Jones having one of his finest spells of the season with some great passing, tackling and shooting. The second quarter continued in a similar vein and the U/10s doubled their lead with debutant, Will Wrigley, finishing well after a slick team move. Luke Dawson was only called into action once in the first half but reacted well to a close range shot to maintain the two goal advantage. The last two quarters dipped in terms of energy and alertness but the U/10s scored a goal in each quarter with Louis Kingsbury jinking past the ‘keeper and slotting home from a tight angle and Jaden Wiltshire finishing well when put through. An unfortunate own goal meant Luke was unable to keep a clean sheet but the team always looked in control. Sam Potter, Ez Allen and Archie Walker were hard to get past at the back while Arthur Quli was unlucky not to score from close range. Fin Marshall and Dylan Morse did well on the wings and it was a great start to 2019. Will Wrigley was given player of the match for a fine debut performance.
Stratton Youth U/10s Blues, travelled down the motorway for an early kick off in Hungerford. The team had improved massively in the run up to Christmas and started well by going ahead in the early stages through a well struck shot from Mike Bettington-Walker. Jack Cummins and Toby Stallard looked dangerous on the attack but the Blues were caught out by a quick break and conceded an equalizer. Julian Gurung was very impressive in the first quarter with some great tackles and clever passes. Assisted by Vivan Nembang at the back they did not deserve to go in on equal terms at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Leighton Emson showed lots of energy on the left wing and played a clever cross for Toby Stallard to poke home from close range. Cory Stewart was integral to the goal by making a great tackle before releasing Leighton. Unfortunately another mix up in defence meant the teams were level at the half way stage. This was despite the Blues dominating possession and having several chances whilst Toby Robinson had been relatively untroubled in goal. The team dipped in the last half of the game but still had opportunities to get back in front with both Jack and Bertie Jarvis having chances. A third defensive error meant the team went behind before they were caught on the break and conceded a fourth goal. Ben Seakins always seemed to create chances in midfield and the team battered the Hungerford goal for the last 5 minutes but were unable to find a way through. The team can feel very unfortunate to not end with at least a draw but they will have learned from the game about the importance of eliminating simple defensive errors and to take their chances. Player of the match was Leighton Emson for his dribbling, tackling and excellent passing.
Stratton Youth U/9’s first league match of 2019 was against Ferndale, and it proved to be a very close encounter with some great attacking football. The match was marked by some standout performances at the back from Henry Wrigley and Zac Walsh, and some fine goal keeping from Josh Price. Stratton’s goals came from Leo Scott, Woody Whitehead, and Archie Miller. Man of the match was Henry Wrigley.
Stratton Youth U/7s first game back in the New Year was a very competitive match. Both teams played some good football and the defending from both sets of players was excellent. The game was level between both teams all throughout the game, both teams similarly matched. Couple of late goals in the last 5 mins decided the game. Goals for the U7s came from Ollie Saunders with 2 goals and Daniel Price scoring. Player of the week went to Henry Strange who played outstanding in the match and showed enthusiasm during training.
