Match reports from week 4

Stratton Youth U/13s
A combative performance from the U/13s in a very entertaining game was undone by a momentary lapse in concentration at the end to give the away team Lydiard a narrow victory. Two goals from Jonny Reynolds (an early solo goal and a long range wind assisted free kick), separated by a goal from the visitors, gave hope of a victory for Stratton but two more goals from Lydiard would mean they wouldn't lead the game again as they went in 2-3 down at half time. In an end-to-end game, Lydiard struggled to cope with the powerful running and close control of Jonny Reynolds who added two more goals in the second half which together with a tap in from Ghaith Lahmar had put Stratton deservedly level at 5-5. Strong tackling and a determination to hold the line against a physical front three for Lydiard was only undone when one of several free kicks in the game was nodded home with a couple of minutes to go. Harvey Williams was awarded player of the match in recognition of his tireless defending, blocking and tackling throughout the second half.

Stratton Youth U/12s
FC Abbey Meads Blue were the visitors in a highly entertaining game with the lead swinging one way then the other. Stratton came from behind twice playing some exciting football moving the ball beautifully to take a deserved 3-2 lead. The away team were awarded a controversial penalty to equalise and a late flourish saw them win the game 4-3. Player of the match Griff Harrison played his first full game in goal and made excellent saves for Stratton Youth, whilst Caleb Kavanagh, Jayden Mullis and Thomas Foley were the scorers.

Stratton Youth U/11s
The U/11s made the short trip up to Swindon Super-marine to play a technically very able team. Luckily the weather dried out just in time for the game and it was an end to end contest. The U/11s took the lead through Louis Kingsbury after a delightful flick through from Shai Robinson. Unfortunately the theme of this season to date continued as two defensive errors meant the U/11s went in a goal down at half time. There has been a focus on what each player is doing when they don't have the ball and there was far better movement and support off the ball but it can still improve. Louis grabbed his second with 10 minutes to go and the U/11s then thought they had scored with the ball in the back of the net but the referee had already blown for a penalty kick which the U/11s subsequently missed. Harley Bennett was outstanding at the back and was named player of the match but Arthur Quli and Sam Potter also did very well at the back. Jack Cummins, Tony Robinson and Dylan Morse all showed good touches and skill at times while Idris Thomas-Jones and Ez Allen battled well in midfield and Luke Dawson made some excellent saves.

Stratton Youth U/11s blue
With all 16 Stratton Blues U/11s players available for the game, the biggest challenge of the day was ensuring everyone got enough game time. The Blues started well, though it took more than 10 minutes to get their first goal. Good passing and defensive work were the highlights. The goals then flowed and the Blues were 5-0 up at half time. The constant chopping and changing of the team, however, meant a lack of fluency in the second half, which ended 1-1. It was the team’s first win of the season but there is lots to work on such as more passing rather than trying to dribble past the entire opposition as that only rarely works! There was good defensive play from Julian Gurung and the two Jacks, Packman & Jones, great finishing from Lewis Daniel-Boothroyd with two goals and the midfield were steady. Other goals came from Leighton Emson, Bertie Jarvis, Harry Phillips and Oliver Keylock.

Stratton Youth U/10s
Wroughton were the visitors on a dull, blustery morning. Both teams played the game at a fast pace with some great defensive skills displayed. Stratton opened the scoring with a goal from Archie Miller followed by further goals from Liam Smith and Woody Whitehead. The man of the match this week was given to Lucas Scotford for his all round performance.

Stratton Youth U/10s Blue
This was the Blues’ third match, and they started strongly with some well taken goals in the first quarter. The recent focus in training on finding space and maintaining position seems to be working well. Confidence was high after a good start, but there was no complacency, and the Blues worked really hard throughout the game. They held the majority of possession and passed the ball around very effectively. There was also some excellent finishing. Overall it was a great match for the Blues against a very positive Hungerford side. Oscar Mylchreest was awarded Man of the Match for some great goals and consistent passing. The other scorers were Xander Dean, Toby Briggs, Finn Pearcey, Luke Richmond and Tom Hoskins.

Stratton Youth U/9s The U/9s were away to Draycott. In a high scoring match some poor defending allowed the home side to score more than Stratton. The U/9s goals came from Freddie Jones, Joshua McGlone and Blaine Bartoloni-Allen. Nathaniel Paddock was the player of the match.

Stratton Youth U/8s The U/8s 13 match unbeaten run came to an end with a very close away match against Draycott Dynamite. After the first 10 mins the game was goalless, with Henry Hurst and Moses Allen stopping Draycotts attack. Draycott scored first and added a 2nd not long after. However Stratton Youth hit back with Ollie Saunders scoring an individual goal and then Lucas Garvey passing to Ollie Saunders to run on and score. Draycott took the lead again and from the kick off, Daniel Price passed back to Ethan Parry who then scored from inside his own half. However Draycott had an identical kick off and scored from inside their own half. Ethan Parry then passed to Daniel Price to score and level the match. Draycott hit back with 3 quick goals. Sion Ellis Jones then passed through to Ollie Saunders to pull one back and complete his 2nd hat-trick in consecutive matches. Player of the week went to Henry Strange who stopped many attacks from Draycott and produced a wonderful save while also playing in goal.

Stratton Youth U/7s The U/7’s were at home to Ferndale Rodbourne and with the skies clearing above from all the bad weather earlier, made it perfect for great footballing conditions. Stratton got off to a great start with lots of attacking football and went 1 – 0 up in the first quarter. Stratton started where they left off in the second quarter scoring another 2 goals, in which one of the goals was a stroke of genius from a throw in by the full back who saw a player unmarked in the middle, then the unmarked player passing it through to the striker, who then went on to score. However Ferndale’s hard work and great enthusiasm pulled one back for the visitors. The third quarter showed great team work and lots of great passing, in which a cheeky little back heel in the box created a great scoring opportunity which was converted with great conviction. Another two goals were to follow due to the team driving forward and converting there chances. In the forth quarter saw another goal added to Stratton’s tally, but also came some outstanding defending from Stratton. With Ferndale seeing much more of the ball they were rewarded with another goal. Player of the day was Henry Sutton.
