Match Reports from week 6

Only 3 of our teams had matches this weekend due to adverse weather conditions caused the postponement of a number of fixtures.

Stratton Youth U/13s
The U/13s travelled to Cheltenham to play a high-flying Southside Star Tigers team in the Gloucestershire County Cup. These games are 11-a-side (not 9-a-side), on a bigger pitch and with larger goals than Stratton are used to and these unfamiliar conditions together with a very decent home side were too much for the boys to cope with. A flurry of early goals from a skilful Southside team quickly put the game out of reach. Despite regrouping and putting in some hard work either side of the half-time break Stratton never truly got to grips with the space the bigger pitch afforded and couldn't settle into the passing rhythm they had shown last week, with Southside eventually winning a well contested and sporting game 10-0.

Stratton Youth U/12s
U/12s travelled to Lydiard Youth for a cup match. Under very wet conditions both teams played open football. The home team took an early lead. Stratton never let their heads go down and battled tirelessly with Sami Zamiri and player of the match Jack Miller charging up and down the flanks. Sam King was relentless in the centre of midfield winning loose balls and starting many attacks. Sami Zamiri and Tom Foley with magnificent strikes were both on the score sheet in the first half to give Stratton the lead. Good work from Caleb Kavannagh resulted in a penalty for the away side which was unfortunately not converted. The second half continued with excellent football from both sides. Ben Szczerkowski and Otto Baxter were solid at the back, ably supported by Tom Wilkinson and Tyler Drew from the midfield. The home team managed to equalise and despite constant Stratton pressure the match went to extra time. The game really came back to life in the second half of extra time with the home team taking an unexpected lead. Stratton had no choice but to throw caution to the wind and with virtually the last kick of the match Sam King scored a cracking goal to take the game to penalties. Ben Szczerkowski and Tom Foley both converted their penalties in between the home side missing their first and a fine save from Griff Harrison saw Stratton progress to the next round.

Stratton Youth U/10s
This game went ahead against a very physical Pewsey side despite the constant rain. The game was evenly matched with Pewsey scoring first but with some great passing and movement by the whole Stratton team it led to Tom Pritchett’s cross being converted by Woody Whitehead. The second half lived up to the first with some great creative skills and strong defending being displayed by both teams with Liam Smith finding the back of the net again. The Man of the Match this week was awarded to Xavier Elderby-Harris for his outstanding performances in goal and the Players’ Player was given to Oliver Jones for his all round play.
